Here is what Google has to say about Empty Nest Syndrome – It can include depression, a sense of loss of purpose, feelings of rejection, or worry, stress, and anxiety over the child’s welfare. Parents who experience empty nest syndrome often question whether or not they have adequately prepared their child to live independently
I know this topic is not in line with the spirit of my blog..but hey it’s my blog and since I am about to experience this I wanted to write about it.
If you follow my blog at all, you know I have two children, one is in med school and has been out the home for 7 years now and my youngest son just turned 18 today. Not only has he turned 18, we are moving him to university tomorrow, insert deep breath here! You may feel sympathy for me right now, either you have been at this point in your life or you dread the day when your own children will go off on their own.
I am going to share a secret, shhhhhh, I am actually very excited about it!
lol I know I am not suppose to be happy about this but I am and truth be told I am tired. I am tired of making lunches, making sure their homework is done, are their favourite jeans clean, can they have a sleep over, can they drink, can their boy/girlfriend sleep over, can they have the car??…you get the picture.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my children, both of them are wonderful beyond talented human beings and have been very successful academically, played very high levels of sports and one of them plays and writes music. I am very close to both of them.
I started motherhood relatively early in life, having my daughter early in my 20’s and with a 7 year gap between my children I have been at this for what feels like a long time. I am sure many of you are reading this in shock and disbelief, your children are number one in your life and you are devastated with them leaving but I am here to tell you from experience the next evolution in your relationship with your children is about to get better and actually a lot more fun!!
If you are struggling with this up coming enviable bitter sweet time in your life, here is what I have learned over the last 7 years since my daughter left home to go off to university.
- No matter where they live in the world, they are still your children.
- No matter how old they get, they are still your children.
- It’s not over it’s just beginning. You now get to have a whole new relationship, one based on friendship.
- They are nicer to you. Being out on their own gives them some appreciation for everything you did for them
- You have more to talk about, instead of nagging at them about cleaning their room, they now have this new exciting life they want to share with you.
- They actually want your advice . Hard to believe I know but now they call to ask you what you think, instead of telling to mind your own business.
- You start to learn from them instead of the other way around. The world is changing so quickly and they are surrounded by new and exciting ideas that we tend to miss out on.
I must confess you will still miss them. As I think about my son leaving, no more high school Friday night football games to watch, no more loud music, not seeing his face everyday makes my heart hurt and even after 7 years I still have days where I miss my daughter terribly.
But even with this I am looking forward to this next chapter in my life, the new independence not only that my children have but I will now have. This is a time in my life where I get to explore new opportunities, new hobbies, more free time, like to write this blog.
And oh ya, don’t do anything crazy like go adopt not one cat but two, like I just did.
Honest this had nothing to do with my empty nest 🙂
Have a great long weekend everyone!
Again thanks to all my followers and my new ones, we are making progress.
Please share my blog with anyone you think may enjoy it.
I was literally staring at my computer trying to figure out what to write about today when I got an email pop up showing I had a new message, the subject line was “$66.50”
This email was a friendly reminder from Kiva, reminding me that I have repayments from the loans I have made and now have excess money to lend to entrepreneurs featured on their site. A few years ago my boss gave me a Kiva account with money in it and I have continued to use and grow this account in the last 3 years later.
The premise of Kiva is very simple;
- Chose a borrower
- Make a loan
- Get repaid
Kiva is a non profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. Leveraging the internet and worldwide network of micro finance institutions, Kiva lets individuals lend as little as $25 to help create opportunity around the world.
What I personally love about Kiva is that it empowers individuals who wouldn’t normally have access to loans and gives them a chance to build a future for themselves.
Another feature of Kiva that I just discovered is the ability to build teams in support of Kiva. I am now part of Team Canada, here a few other of the top teams:
As always I have simplified Kiva down into my own words, it really is worth checking out their site for more details at Kiva.org, you won’t regret it!
Have a great day everyone!
If you know anyone else that maybe interested in supporting Kiva, please share this post with them.
I love capitalism, I am not afraid to say it but I also love meditating, yoga and yes even social programs, after all I live in Canada. We pay some of the highest income taxes in the world, is it perfect?, no however I think our heart is the right place. Lol, I pretty sure about half of you reading this right now think I am crazy!!
Since starting this project I have been a bit disappointed by what I have come across.
Here is my number one piece of advice, “if it seems to good to be true, walk away!” Run! Don’t sign up, don’t give them even 10$!!
I am amazed at the number of sites dedicated to selling you, not products but a dream of becoming rich. Ads that quote statistics of the their top earners making millions in just 2 years or less. They are taking advantage of those who are in a temporary time in their life where they are desperate for money and are easily swayed by unrealistic promises and results.
I hate being on a soap box, I have no interest in under cutting anyone or taking away from their right to make a living. But in case you are tempted to sign up for those slick marketing promotions, at least ask yourself these questions first:
1. Are they promising unrealistic results, too good to be true?
2. Is there a pressure to sign up right away?
3. Is the advertising full of people holding bundles of money, lounging on yachts?, you get the idea.
4. Do they ask for your credit card information for their free trial?
5. Do they promise instant results?
Do your home work, research the internet, read articles, watch you tube videos, but go with your gut. Dream big, have large expectations for yourself, but trust your inner voice.
Enough gloom and doom, it’s Friday after all. I just want my message to be, you can have great success and make money and still do it with integrity and with yours and others best interest at heart.
Remember, what we put out into the universe is what we get back!
Have a great long weekend everyone!
As always please feel free to share my blog, like it, and if you think I am totally wrong leave a comment 🙂 I love all perspectives, it is the only way to grow.
I know my Blog is about an experiment, being successful with Amway and making some money, however I still take time for myself in order to not lose sight of what really is important and makes me happy. Happiness can be very different for everyone and how we can get there is very personal, 2 things that I practice daily to help me keep that balance is yoga and meditation.
Here is my yoga workout for today
and my evening meditation
Hoping you may enjoy them also.
Day 3 and it’s Friday and I am going to be honest, thank goodness for the weekend! And you know what? I am taking the weekend off 🙂 We have an entire weekend of fun on the water. Boating, tubing, paddle boarding, Lobster fishing and eating, Scallop Festival, live music…if you haven’t guessed it, I live on the East Coast, of Canada and love it!!
To be even more honest I am exhausted, this social media stuff is hard work!! Friday seems to have been a slow day out there in the internet world, I have however managed to increase my Twitter followers to just over 800, and my Blog has had 160 views, with 2 followers and 2 comments! I have to admit I was very excited for those follows and comments, thank you to those who have participated, it means a lot!
I guess for now the plan is slow and steady, I am wondering what the tipping point is? How many Twitter/Pinterest/Instagram/Blog followers do I require before those sites automatically generate unsolicited followers? I am starting to see progress with Twitter, I got many unsolicited followers today, probably about double from yesterday. Pinterest seems to be one for one, with followers, although I still haven’t quit mapped out exactly how I will leverage Pinterest and not 100% confident in how effective it will be for selling a product. I may need to look at other options. Instagram is on the back burner until my products and start up package arrives, I really only want to use real pictures of product I use and pictures I take.
I wish I had more words of wisdom but at the end of day 3, I am pretty proud of myself and how much I have accomplished in the short time. I am looking forward to the weekend in the sun.
And once I again I can’t express how grateful I am for the number of people who followed me, retweeted for me, and sent me words of encouragement. #feelingblessed
Have a great weekend everyone!!
Here are the paddle boards I will on all weekend!! #workingonatan 🙂
